Merle Lee Martin, 80, a lifelong resident of Reynolds, died at 4:33 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012 in White County Memorial from complications of a stroke.
He was born February 13, 1932 in Reynolds in his family farmhouse to the late Merle C. and Anna M. (Dempster) Martin and was a 1950 graduate of Chalmers School.
His marriage was to Nila Jean Long on November 16, 1952 in Carroll County. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2007.
He was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Army from 1953 and was discharged in 1955. He was a current member of the Chalmers American Legion participating as a member of the Color Guard as well.
Mr. Martin farmed grain and livestock his entire life. He was an accomplished blacksmith who could run a forge and shoe horses. Other hobbies over the years included fishing, hunting, trapping, cutting wood and gardening. He enjoyed spending time helping out and watching his grandson Wes race at the US 24 Racetrack and was NASCAR Tony Stewart fan.
Surviving is his daughter, Lora Pinkerton (husband: Jerry) of Wolcott; a brother, Dempster Martin (wife: Ruth) of Reynolds and three sisters, Marian Townsend of Upland, IN, Carol Schroeder (husband: Jim) of Crossville, Tennessee and Nancy Martin of West Lafayette, two grandchildren, Amber Pinkerton of Monticello and Wes Pinkerton (wife: Amanda) and three great-grandchildren, Caylah, Chase and Addie Sherwood. Also preceding in death are two brothers, Hugh and Jack Martin and a son, Scott.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston. Funeral service there 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2012; Pastor Bill Henderson to officiate.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
