The angels were singing as they welcomed their newest angel Betty Porter, into their arms at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, April 29, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Central of Lafayette. Betty had been a resident at St. Anthony Nursing Home since Thanksgiving 2011 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
She was born December 4, 1930 at St. Elizabeth Hospital of Lafayette to the late Bernard and Fern (Rosenbarger) Holtkamp. She graduated from Fowler High School in 1948, and was very proud to be the only high school graduate from her family.
She married Marvin E. Porter Sr. on April 23, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fowler. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1973.
Betty and Marvin’s son, Gene Porter, preceded her in death in 1994.
Betty owned and operated Porter Shoe Store. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Von Tobels, Luck Trucking and Wolcott Fertilizer besides working at the Ribbon Factory in Wolcott.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over fifty years and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington, where she was a member of the Alter & Rosary, and was honored being named Rosarian of the Year in 2004.
Betty was known by many names such as Mom, Momma, Betts, Grandma, Maude, Grammie, Grams, Grammie Great and Mimi.
Surviving are two daughters, Kristin Williams (husband: Gary) of Reynolds and Jody Morgan (husband: Bill) of Brookston, a daughter-in-law, Denise Porter of Remington, and a brother, Bill Holtkamp of Valparaiso.
Her grandchildren were her shining stars and they are: Gene Porter (wife: Stefanie), Molly Marchand (fiancé: Jason Brown), Aaron Porter, Janelle Batley (husband: Bill), Jamie Spencer (husband: Mike), Julie Leonard (husband: David) and Katie and Will Morgan.
Her little twinkling stars were her great-grandchildren; Aricka, Brayden and Cody Batley, Madyson and Levi Spencer, Case Haulk, Isaiah and Helena Leonard, Kane and Chezney Porter and Jayden and Josie Brown.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Holtkamp and a sister, Marylou Dallinger.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. (EDT) Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Stitz-Clapper Funeral Home of Remington. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington with Rev. Thomas Fox officiating. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church to hold mass in her name or the Betty Porter Memorial Fund.
