Biography

Ruth Marjorie Brown, 93, of Marion, died at 7:58 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis.
She was born January 3, 1918 to the late William and Clara Rheude. She was born on her parent’s farm on the Indiana/Illinois state line in Sheldon, Illinois. Her father brought in the family doctor to oversee her delivery in a severe snow storm using his sleigh and his team of horses. She graduated from Sheldon High School, and served as a class officer. She then attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Lafayette, and graduated in 1947.
She was briefly married to Dale Knot of Marion, Indiana, before marrying Arthur Gilbert Brown. He preceded her in death.
During World War II, she served as a cadet in The Cadet Nurse Corps Program. She then served for over thirty years as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion, Indiana.
As a teenager, she showed Angus cattle in 4-H. In 1938, she was awarded Grand Champion 4-H club calf.
All of her family and friends will tell you that her greatest passion was raising Shetland Ponies and Arabian Horses. She was an active member of the Indiana Arabian Horse Club, Indiana Saddle Horse Association (where she was presented with the “Spirit of ISHA” award in 1997), Circle G Saddle Club of Marion, Indiana, and Grant County 4-H Wranglers. Her favorite breed were Arabians, especially those of the Russian heritage. Her favorite was Ari-Chero Muslim #310899 sired by Muslim through D-Hafida Cherokee. She studied the lineage of Muslim in great detail.
Surviving is son, Robert Alan Brown of Indianapolis, and two nieces, Anne Patton Schubert of Taylorsville, Kentucky, and Mary Patton of Earl Park.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucile Patton (husband: John Patton, Jr.) of Earl Park, and a cousin to whom she was very close to, Marge Cheek (husband: Jesse).
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. (CST) until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. (CST) Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Stitz-Clapper Funeral Home of Kentland with Father Gross officiating. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery of Kentland.
