Biography

Gretchen A. Hartman, 75, of New Palestine, passed away at 9:08 a.m. Monday, March 1, 2010 at Hancock Regional Hospital.

She was born on June 19, 1934 in Connersville to the late Norman and Marie Backmeyer Amos. She was a 1952 graduate of Connersville High School.

Her marriage was to Albert C. "Abe" Hartman on April 15, 1955 in St. John United Church of Christ. He preceded her in death on July 10, 2009.

She was a long time member of St. John United Church of Christ and a member of the Rachel Circle Women's Fellowship Group.

Mrs. Hartman worked for several years at Southern Hancock School Corporation in the cafeteria and for Social Security Administration as a secretary.

She loved quilting, bird watching, and spending time with her cat, Willie, who was very dear to her.

Surviving is a son, Gary A. Hartman (wife: Pam) of Fairland; three daughters, Jean M. Payne (companion: Barry) of Speedway, Judy L. Wieneke (husband: Kim) of McCordsville and Susan K. Hartman of Indianapolis; a sister, Mary Lou Grand (husband: George) of Martinsville and a brother, David Amos (wife: Donna) of Connersville.

Gretchen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Greg, Sarah, Kayleigh, Gary, Jake and Kyle; great-granddaughters, Katie, Kylie and Abbie and her great-grandson, Ryan.

Her infectious smile and warm heart made her a friend to all. She will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. (noon) Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. John United Church of Christ (11000 East Washington St., Indianapolis). Rev. Audrey Alexander to officiate. Interment to follow in St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to the St. John United Church of Christ or to Hancock Regional Hospice.
