Life Legacy


Mellie L. Messman, 98, formerly of Earl Park, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, February 14, 2010 in Homewood Health Care of Lebanon where she had been a resident since 2006.

Born September 7, 1911 in Leesburg to the late John and Hattie Umholtz. She was a 1929 graduate of Earl Park High School. She was a resident of Earl Park for 69 years, moving to Kentland in 1982.

Her marriage was to Charles J. Messman and he preceded her in death in January 1981.

Mrs. Messman worked in the cafeteria at South Newton School Corporation for several years. She was a member of the St. John the Baptist Rosary Society of Earl Park, St. Joseph's Church Women's Club, Birthday Club and Tri Kappa Euchre all of Kentland.

Mellie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing and playing cards.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Render of Sherman, IL and Karen Overman (husband: John) of Whitestown.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Becky Burton King (husband: David) of Boston, MA, Jill Overman (companion: Jerry Bishop) of Lebanon, Kathy Phillips Scheffler (husband: David) of Sherman, IL, and Susan Phillips Wheeler (husband: Josh) of Santa Monica, CA; and her great-grandchildren, Lucie Ciara and Sam King, Gavin and Gracie Bishop, Ryan, Ian and Jack Scheffler, and a great-great-granddaughter due in March to Susan and Joshn Wheeler.

Friends may call 1 hour prior to an 11 a.m. (CST) Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Kentland. Rev. Robert Bernotas Celebrating the Mass. Interment to follow at the St. Jospeh's Cemetery, Kentland. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mellie to the charity of donor's choice.
