Life Legacy
Gwendolyn A. Barkley Pender, 92, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 9:50 a.m. at George Ade Healthcare Center. She had been a resident there since September 2009.
She was born on December 28, 1917 in Jasper County Hospital, Rensselaer to the late Earl and Lottie (Marian) Barkley. She was raised on the family farm north of Rensselaer in Barkley Township. She attended Barkley School and was a 1935 graduate of Rensselaer High School.
She married William Pender on December 18, 1937 and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1992. She was a longtime member of the Wolcott United Methodist Church. Through the years, she stayed active in The Order of Eastern Star, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, and the Remington Sorority Auxiliary. She was an avid card player in bridge and euchre, belonging to several card groups over the years. She was a homemaker, but also worked at Thayer Inc., Wolcott schools, and the Wolcott Public Library.
Surviving is a daughter, Peggy A. Oberlander (husband: Larry) of Wolcott, and a son, Robert E. Pender (wife: Dr. Nancy) of Orlando, Florida; four grandchildren, Deanna Frey (husband: John), Cheryl Firkins (husband: Tim), Jim Oberlander (wife: Marta), and Will Pender (wife: Andrea).
Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Gwen's family always came first and she enjoyed spending time by listening and giving each one her special love.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Wolcott United Methodist Church with services there at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010. Pastor Guy Brown to officiate. Interment to follow at Remington Cemetery, Remington.
Preceding her in death with her parents and husband, is a son, William Pender, Jr., and a brother, Junior Barkley.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Gwen to the Wolcott United Methodist Church to assist with the Angel Food Bank.
